- Itinerary:
Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Desert
Your journey begins in Fez, where you’ll depart toward the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is the charming town of Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its clean streets and alpine architecture. You’ll continue through cedar forests near Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques, before reaching Midelt, known for its apple orchards and stunning mountain scenery. The drive then takes you through the dramatic landscapes of the Ziz Valley, where palm groves and traditional villages line the river. By evening, you’ll arrive in the Merzouga Desert, where golden dunes rise from the Sahara. Here, you can enjoy a camel ride and spend the night under the stars in a desert camp.
Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Berber Nomads – Khamlia – Merzouga
Wake up early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes before heading out to explore the desert region. You’ll visit Berber nomad families who live in the desert, learning about their traditional way of life. Next, continue to Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa music, a soulful tradition brought by descendants of African slaves. After enjoying tea and music with the locals, you’ll return to Merzouga to relax. In the evening, you can experience another magical sunset over the Sahara and spend the night in a traditional riad or desert camp.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley
After breakfast, leave the desert behind and head toward the Todra Gorges, one of Morocco’s most impressive natural sights. The towering cliffs of the canyon reach heights of up to 300 meters, and the narrow passage is a paradise for hikers and photographers alike. Continue through the scenic road dotted with Berber villages before arriving at the Dades Valley, known for its dramatic rock formations and lush landscapes. You’ll spend the night in a local guesthouse overlooking the valley.
Day 4: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – Marrakech
Today’s route takes you along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, with stops to admire the ancient fortresses and oases along the way. Arrive in Ouarzazate, the “Gateway to the Desert,” and visit the Taourirt Kasbah or one of the local film studios. Then continue to Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s best-preserved ksars, featured in many films and series. Crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, you’ll enjoy panoramic views before descending to the vibrant city of Marrakech, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 5: Marrakech – Excursion to Essaouira – Marrakech
After breakfast, embark on a full-day excursion to the charming coastal town of Essaouira. Along the way, you’ll pass through argan tree forests, where you might see goats climbing the branches. Once in Essaouira, explore the medina, stroll along the ramparts, and enjoy fresh seafood by the harbor. The town’s relaxed atmosphere, artistic vibe, and Atlantic breeze make it a perfect contrast to the desert. In the evening, return to Marrakech, where your journey concludes.
